Toenail Surgery with Heels & Toes: Everything You Need to Know

When ingrown toenails don’t respond to treatment or are causing constant pain, swelling or even infections that just keep flaring up, you should consider nail surgery.

We understand that this can sound daunting, but when you consider that nail surgery is minimally invasive and has a 97% success rate, this really could be the best long-term outcome for you. Let’s take you through what’s involved…

Initially, your friendly Heels & Toes podiatrist will meet with you for a thorough consultation, to ensure that you are a suitable candidate for nail surgery. Everything will be explained, we’ll discuss the risks and benefits, your general health and we will address any concerns that you may have. We always take time to answer your questions and put your mind at ease. If surgery is the best way forward for you, we’ll book you in for the nail surgery and send a letter to your GP, for your patient file.

On the day of your procedure, we recommend that you arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment, and that you don’t drive home. To start with you’ll be given an anaesthetic injection, and this will be followed by the removal of part or all of the affected toenail. The nailbed is then treated with Phenol to prevent regrowth, then dressed. Throughout the procedure, we’ll check that you’re ok and explain everything as we go.

For the day following surgery, you should relax and let the healing process begin, don’t worry – you’ll be back on your feet in no time. It’s then just a matter of keeping the dressing dry and clean, returning the following day so we can apply a fresh dressing and take you through your self-care regime.

You’ll need to attend post operative check-ups, where we also provide after care advice to ensure you maintain healthy nails going forward. The healing process varies for each person. If you have any concerns regarding your surgery or recovery, please give your friendly Heels & Toes Podiatrist a call on 01782 538792.

There really won’t be a massive impact on your daily routine, but there really will be a massive impact going forward, as you step towards a pain-free future.
